Highland has been home to many contented residents since 1847, when Michael and Judith Johnson from Ohio first settled here. Legend says that their son, Rod, harvested a flock of ducks which had frozen in the Little Calumet River. With the proceeds from their sale, he was able to purchase 20 acres of land. In 1883, railroad surveyors from the Chicago & Atlantic Railroad nicknamed this sand ridge the "Highlands." Eventually the name stuck, as Dutch farmers and more settlers moved in to take advantage of the town's location and railroad access. The town grew substantially during the 1950s and 1960s as residents sought to escape the drudgeries of life in nearby industrial cities, but managed to retain its small town charm and ambiance.
